Short biography of the American painter James Abbott McNeill Whistler.

The American Tonalist painter James Abbott McNeill Whistler born in Lowell, USA, 1834. He stayed from 1843 till 1848 with his family in St. Petersburg, Russia. In this Russian city he had also his first lessons at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts. When his father died in 1849 they went back to the US and settled in Pomfret, Connecticut. James went to the local school and in 1851 he be in the military Academy. After three years in the army he moved to Paris in 1855. He worked there in the Art studio of Charles Gabriel Gleyre and became a member of the Paris Gang. He went to London in 1859 where he belong to the Pre Raphaelite group. Whistler traveled in 1866 to the South of America. Returned back to England and in 1879 he went to Venice. Whistler became a member of the British Artists Society in 1886. In 1892 he moved to Paris, France. He also visited Amsterdam and Munich. The American Tonalist painter James Abbott McNeill Whistler died in London, 1903.
