Short biography from the Dutch portrait painter Frans Hals ( ca 1580 - 1666 ). |

The Dutch portrait painter born in Antwerp, Belgium, ca 1580. Later he Returned to the Netherlands and lived in Haarlem. His younger brother Dirck Hals born there in 1591. He had his educations from Karel van Mander ( Flemish painter ), from 1600 till 1603 in Haarlem. When he had the age of 27, he went in to the Guild of Saint Luke ( Sint Lucasgilde ). Hals went for a short time in 1616 to Antwerp and ca 1635 to Amsterdam. Almost all of the time of his life the Dutch portrait painter worked and lived in Haarlem. He had several pupils as Judith Leyster, the Ostade brothers, Terborch and Steen. Frans Hals is the most famous portrait painter Holland ever had. The Dutch painter died in Haarlem, the Netherlands, 1666. |
