Short biography from the American Romantic Landscape painter Thomas Cole.

The American Romantic Landscape painter Thomas Cole was born in 1801, Lancashire in England. He came from an Anglo American family. Thomas Cole returned to America with his family in 1818. He started to study in 1823 at the Art Academy in Philadelphia and after the Hudson River School. At that time he specialized in Romantic landscape paintings. Between 1829 and 1842 Cole traveled to Switzerland, Italy and England. In Europe he studied the European Masters who painted landscapes. When Thomas Cole went back to the United States, he introduced the new style of moral, symbolic landscape art. Thomas Cole, the great American landscape painter died in 1848.
