Short biography from the Italian Venetian painter Canaletto ( 1697 - 1768 ) aka Giovanni Antonio Canal. |

The Italian Venetian painter Giovanni Antonio Canal, better know as Canaletto born in 1697, San Lio. His father who worked as a theater painter gave him the first paintings lessons. He followed his father and employed himself also to a theatrical painter. Canaletto and his father traveled to Rome in 1719. He met a few artists as Gian Paolo Pannini and studied. Canaletto became registered in the guild of Venetian painters in 1720. In 1725 Canaletto made some works for Stefano Conti and he met the Englishman Joseph Smith in Venice, after that Canaletto started to paint for the English market. Canaletto traveled between England and Italy and he returned permanently to Venice in 1755. The Venetian Academy elected him in 1763. The Italian Venetian painter Canaletto died from sickness in 1768. |
